Original title

Eloísa está debajo de un almendro

Enrique Jardiel Poncela’s opus magnum that renewed post-war comedy drama.

A dramatic comedy by Jardiel Poncela premiered at the Teatro de la Comedia in Madrid on 24 May 1940, it is deemed to be the author’s most famous work and one of the great contributions to the theatre of the time.

Divided into a Prologue and Two Acts, the work recounts the vicissitudes of the couple, Fernando and Mariana, and the get-together with their peculiar families, the Brions and the Ojedas. This encounter is indelibly marked by the mysterious disappearance of Eloísa some years before.

This is a highly original comedy, with a quality text and a style that combines surrealism, the Gothic novel and the theatre of the absurd. It stands out as a turning point in post-war comedy theatre.
