Electra

Play by Benito Pérez Galdós based on the Greek myth of Electra, describing the social reality in Spain at the time.

"Electra" is a play by Benito Pérez Galdós, premiered successfully in January 1901, in the Teatro Español theatre in Madrid.

The author condenses all the concerns from his works: the love of truth, the rejection of violence and the fight against fanaticism and superstition, amongst others. According to Galdós, he wanted to promote a transformation in Spain based on science and justice.

The play in five acts tells us about the misfortunes of young Electra who goes to live with her uncle and aunt after her mother dies. She soon falls in love with a scientist, Máximo, but apparently he might be her brother. She is panic-stricken and she joins a convent until she discovers that the rumours about Máximo are false.
