Original title

El río del Edén

The novel 'El río del Edén' (The River of Eden) explores a family microcosm using a bold narrative technique skilfully handled by José María Merinoa. This work won the 2013 National Narrative Award.

Narrated in the second person, the novel begins with an excursion by the protagonist and his disabled son to a lake in the Alto Tajo region. Along the way, the main character recalls his love story with his wife, now dead, and how the arrival of that disabled child triggered a profound crisis in the life of the family. A story steeped in affection but also betrayal, re-encounters and regrets.
The work takes the form of a realistic drama, in which the characters and the stage in which the narrative unfolds take on particular importance. Sentimental and moral unease permeate the lives of the beings who people its pages and whose essential problems –like the right to a dignified death– are depicted in the book.
