Original title

El otro: misterio en tres jornadas y un epílogo

This play is subtitled 'Misterio en tres jornadas y un epílogo' (Mystery in three acts and an epilogue) and forms part of what was known as experimental theatre, which Unamuno and others introduced into Spain.

First performed six years after it was written, this play clearly mirrors the main concerns that run through the literary and philosophical career of Miguel de Unamuno.

Using a highly schematised plotline and setting –typical of classical Greek tragedy– and under the guise of a detective story, Unamuno stripped away all digressions and rhetorical excess to shine a light on all the existential conflicts and passions in which the characters are caught up.

The 'other' alludes to the character of Cosme –Damián's twin brother, whom he admits to having murdered– in what is evidently a retelling of the biblical story of Cain and Abel, already explored by the author in one of his most famous novels, 'Abel Sánchez'.
