Francisco Nieva’s comic play, based on the novel of the same name by Jan Potocki.

Francisco Nieva’s play premiered at the “Contemporary Spanish Authors Show”, held in Alicante in October 1994. The work was first published in the “Complete Plays” collection (1991), although the most thorough edition, including drawings by the author, was published in 2003.

Based on the novel by Jan Potocki, Nieva presents a magical comedy about the misadventures of Alphonse van Worden, with a mix of trials of initiation, sexual perversions, murders and secrets.

Nieva emphasises the most transgressive aspects of Potocki’s novel, such as its erotic dimension, playing with the unreal, and the fantastic. Its many merits were recognised by a National Drama Literature Award in 1992.
