Original title

El Desdén con el desdén

An ingenious comedy by Agustín Moreto about the punishment of a woman who does not want to fulfil the role established by society for her as a wife and mother.

"El desdén con el desdén" is one of the most famous comedies by Agustín Moreto, Spanish Golden Age playwright.

Published for the first time in 1654, in the "Primera parte de comedias" comedy anthology, it is about a man who is in love with a woman but punishes her because she is indifferent towards all her suitors, showing that she does not care for the established role of wife and mother.

This comedy, which takes place in a bourgeois living room and is prone to judgments and moralising advice, was inspired by "La vengadora de las mujeres", by Lope de Vega. It was imitated by Molière in his "La pricesse d'Élide" and by many other playwrights at the time such as Pierre de Marivaux and Alain-René Lesage.
