A tragedy by Lope de Vega, with which he recovered his popularity, despite it being represented only once.
A theatrical tragedy in the genre of a drama dealing with honour. written by Lope de Vega in 1631 and published in a separate edition in 1634. In this edition the 68-year-old author included a prologue in which he defended the concept of new tragedy.
The play represents the love of Count Federico for Casandra, the young wife of his father, the Duke of Ferrara, and the Duke's response when he discovers the adultery. As is normally the case in this genre, the main theme is honour, manifested in the punishment that the Duke imposes on the two lovers, but he conceals the real cause behind a political one.
