El Amor Brujo

The gypsy world finds a niche in the Venice Festival.

This show was designed by Mario Maya on a commission for the Venice Festival (1987). The artist, who choreographed and co-directed the project, produced his own particular vision of the classic by Falla. In this choreography, Maya once again demonstrates his mastery of the large stage, and moves his dancers with decision and clarity.
The plot, despite the subtle changes introduced by Maya, largely follows the canon of the earlier versions. We thus see the tragic love story between the gypsy Candela and Carmelo, whose passion is threatened by the girl's former lover.
