A legendary musical piece composed by Manuel de Falla, which has become one of the most played works in the history of Spanish music, and in most versions.
A masterpiece by Manuel de Falla, composed as a result of his friendship with the dancer and singer Pastora Imperio. Its text was by the married couple formed by Gregorio Martínez Sierra and María de la O Lejárrega. It was first performed on 15 April 1915 in the Teatro Lara theatre, with Pastora Imperio taking the vocal part under the conductor José Moreno Ballesteros. In 1925, Falla himself transformed the original version into a ballet for orchestra, adding three short songs for mezzo-soprano.
The plot tells the story of love between Candela and Carmelo, who live tormented by the young girl’s former lover.
It is a composition is imbued with the spirit of Andalusia but is wholly original, with such famous pieces as "the Song of the Will-O'-the-Wisp" and the "Ritual Fire Dance".
