Mario Maya

Original title

El Amargo

García Lorca's brutal vision of a gypsy's fate performed by a towering figure of flamenco, Mario Maya.

This piece was first performed in the Festival of Châteauvallon (1980), the same year that Mario Maya received the Giraldillo Dance Prize in the 2nd City of Seville Flamenco Art Biennial. The dramatic thread of this poem in dance was the 'Romance del Emplazado' by Federico García Lorca, which narrates the cruel fate of the gypsy known as 'El Amargo'. In addition to choreographer and director, Maya himself took the leading role and gave a performance of great fluency and authenticity. He later made a new version of the work to mark the presentation of the company Flamenco Mario Maya Danza Teatro in 1985.
