Original title

El alcalde de Zalamea

"Honour drama" written by Calderón de la Barca in which the individual is confronted with the reigning classes.

Drama by Calderón de la Barca in which the individual is confronted with politicians and the military, which reflects the concerns of the time.

Set in the town of Zalamea de la Serena, in Extremadura, the story is about a rich farmer, Pedro Crespo, who discovers that an aristocrat, the captain of the infantry regiment under the general Don Lope de Figueroa, has raped his daughter.

The story is about honour, one of the basic themes in Spanish Baroque theatre. The author specifically writes about the confrontation between the individual honour of the farmer against the corporate honour, or esprit de corps, of the infantry, where the former is victorious. As well as the theme of honour, the author explains his view of what power should be like in a municipality in the Modern Age.
