Original title

Diálogo de la lengua

Work on the Castilian language by the humanist Juan de Valdés.

This work was produced in around 1535 by the humanist and writer Juan de Valdés. Valdés wrote this work during his stay in Naples at the time of the Spanish dominion in order to satisfy Italian intellectuals who wished to improve their knowledge of the Spanish language. Drafted in full Renaissance style, the author structured the work in the form of a discussion between himself and three Italian interlocutors who ask him a series of questions concerning rules on phonetics, vocabulary and grammar. The work was thus decisive in ensuring that the Castilian language took its place alongside other cultivated languages.

The printed version did not appear until 1737, when Gregorio Mayans y Siscar included it in the appendix to his work 'Orígenes de la lengua española' on the origins of the Spanish language.
