late 9th century

Original title

Chronica Adefonsi III

The 'Chronicle of Alfonso II', of which two versions are known, constitutes the most genuine composition of the historiography of the Astur-Leonese people, and its authorship was attributed to the monarch himself.

In a a novel development, the author of this chronicle incorporated various elements from oral tradition such as fables, miracles and other wonderful events into the historical narration.

The first version, known as the 'Rotense Chronicle', is conserved in a codex from the monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla and narrates the period between the reigns of the Visigoth Wamba (672) and Ordoño II of Asturias (866). It is accompanied by passages from the text known as the 'Prophetic Chronicle', which announced the end of Muslim power in Spain and dates from 883.

The 'Chronicle of Sebastián', the second version, owes its name to the bishop of Ourense, Sebastián de Salamanca, who Alfonso III commended to redraft the text in a more elaborate and cultivated style, as well as incorporating new events and eliminating judgements of interpretation.
