Legendary choreographer Pilar López staged the famous concerto for guitar and orchestra by Joaquín Rodrigo some sixty years ago.
The sister of 'La Argentinita' premièred her choreography to Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo in 1952 in Buenos Aires (Argentina), with her company El Ballet Español. Following the concerto’s three movements, Pilar López created her show in three tempos, naming them ‘dusk, ‘night’ and ‘day’. The tour that followed the première was accompanied by the Bética Orchestra conducted by Ernesto Halftter.
Fifty years later in 2001, the Spanish National Ballet decided to revive the choreography, convincing the retired Pilar López to share the staging of the work, which debuted at La Zarzuela Theatre in Madrid on 19th December. The new version faithfully recreated the original staging.
