Original title

Ceremonial

In this work the choreographer and director Mario Maya experiments with the language of flamenco based on the poetic work of Juan de Loxa.

Presented in the legendary Café de Chinitas (1974) under the title 'Ceremonial de cante, baile y guitarra', with this work Mario Maya aimed to analyse and reformulate the language of flamenco. This piece thus traces the history of this Spanish musical and dance genre from its Arab origins through to the most innovative trends of the present day, such as for example the introduction of Dadáist phonetics into the flamenco spectacle.
The background to the plot is provided by a poem written by Juan de Loxa, which tells the story of the people of Granada and their fight to recover the artistic values of their land. Throughout its multiple performances, a large number of the greatest names in the flamenco world took part in the project, including the flamenco singers Gómez de Jerez and Juan Montoya, as well as the guitar playing of de Luís Habichuela.
