Original title

Carmen

The dancer and choreographer Rafael Aguilar gave a new turn to this mythical work with a show that debuted in Tokyo in 1992.

The plot behind the choreography comes from the legendary novel 'Carmen' by French writer Prosper Mérimée and the famous opera of the same name by the French composer Georges Bizet. It also uses sources from the 'Fantasia de Carmen' by composer and violinist Pablo Sarasate, a fantasy for violin inspired by Bizet’s opera and the flamenco musical arrangements by Flavio Pérez and Llorenç Barber, specifically for Rafael Aguilar.
With these tools, Aguilar staged an undoubtedly dramatically powerful choreography. Through the mixture of styles and dances (flamenco, bolero, etc.), he penetrates the protagonist's condition as a free spirit in search of her own identity by rejecting the social conventions of her day.
