Original title

Carmen

Reinterpretation of the classic by Georges Bizet, and the definitive establishment of Antonio Gades on the international stage.

The first version of the work was premiered at the Spoleto Festival in Rome in 1962. A few years later, Antonio Gades returned to the work as a result of his collaboration with the filmmaker Carlos Saura, as part of the flamenco trilogy. This second version was first staged in Paris in 1983.
This second reinterpretation, fuller and more elaborate, was a resounding success with audiences and critics, and definitely consolidated the choreographer's international reputation. The work, together with 'Blood Wedding' became one of the most representative of all Gades' creations.
