Original title

Campos de Castilla

The landscape of Castile and the countryside of Soria are the setting for the reflections in one of the highpoints of the literary output of the poet and prose writer, Antonio Machado.

Machado, a member of the Generation of ’98 movement, composed this book of poems during his stay in the city of Soria - five decisive years in his literary career and personal life. He came to this Castilian capital city in 1907, and in 1909 married the young Leonor Izquierdo, who was to die of tuberculosis in the same city in 1912.

The intimate tone of earlier poems is continued in the “Campos de Castilla” book, but now instead of poetic introspection it represents ‘intellectual objectivity’, achieved through the permanent identification of the Castilian landscape with the poet’s soul.

Other important aspects are the influence of the “Romancero” genre, patently clear in the long romance titled “La tierra de Alvargonzález”, and the appearance of the first extremely brief poems in the series of “Proverbs and Songs”, a poetic style he was later to use copiously.
