Mario Maya

Original title

Camelamos naquenar

The choreographer and director Mario Maya drmatises the persecution suffered by the gypsy people.

In 'Camelamos naquerar' –'we want to speak' in the Caló language of the gypsies– Maya takes on the role of defender of the gypsy people, as he exposes the injustices which they have undergone. With a script by the poet José Heredia, the artist constructs a work of great dramatic power where flamenco takes centre stage. He does this by using theatrical resources to present a succession of songs and dances: jaleos, tonás, lullabies, cañas and tangos, among others. Its first production in Granada (1976) featured stars such as the flamenco singer Gómez de Jerez, the guitarist 'El Chuscales' and the dancer Concha Vargas.
