Aires de villa y corte

The image of an era. The style of dance known as the escuela bolera and the typical settings and costumes from the time of Goya are at the heart of this production by the dancer and choreographer José Antonio Ruiz.

First performed in the Lope de Vega theatre in Seville in 1994, 'Aires de villa y corte' is a new incursion by the dancer and choreographer José Antonio Ruiz into the traditional Escuela Bolera school. He designed this choreography for his own company Los Ballets Españoles. In 2005 he returned to it after choosing it for his presentation as the new artistic director in the second stage of the Spanish National Ballet.
The music was composed by José Nieto, who created a score in five movements which perfectly captures the atmosphere of the time of Goya. José Antonio composed a choreography based on various dances without any apparent connection and with a loosely sketched plotline, but which as a whole forms a unique image which evocatively recreates the busy high spirits of that period.
