The new El Greco Museum in Toledo shows "the most modern" works by one of the greatest geniuses of painting.
El Greco Museum in Toledo provides the chance to discover, with a new display and a communicative exhibition, the work by this painter, and especially his last production, which he carried out in Spain.
A fundamental chapter in the Mannerist painter's work, who was trained in Crete and Italy, and flourished in Toledo. The patronage relationships and Spanish clients conditioned the evolution of his work. The El Greco Museum displays the most important paintings of this period, such as the Apostolate series, -an excellent example for understanding the last stage of the painter’s creative process-, the San Bernardino altarpiece and the View and plan of Toledo. It also shows visitors the works that the artist carried out in Toledo and exhibits the work of some of his followers, such as Luis Tristán.
The museum dedicates a space to the Marquis of Vega-Inclán, the founder, which introduces the figure of this collector and pioneer in promoting tourism of Spanish arts and the recovery of El Greco. Several environments devised by himself are presented as an example of the romantic interpretation that was made of the painter at the beginning of last century.
This was a frequent subject in the El Greco workshop, of which Luis Tristán was the most outstanding student. The lengthening of proportions, the violence of the chiaroscuro and the modelling of the face all derive from El Greco.
