History in sculptures

The museum is located in the former Episcopal Palace of Ourense, dating from the 12th century.

It contains items dating from the Palaeolithic period to the present day. The collections of objects from the prehistoric period, fortified Iron-Age settlements and the Roman era are particularly interesting. The most important section explores the Iron-Age hill forts and features an original collection of stone sculptures and warriors. Also worth noting are the funerary offerings from megalithic tombs and a selection of Renaissance and Baroque sculptures.
The museum premises are currently undergoing refurbishment, and the exhibition spaces are closed. However, the San Francisco exhibition room is hosting the exhibition entitled 'Sculpture anthology', focusing on the sculpture series and certain key elements of this museum, such as the figures known as the 'guerreiros galaicos' and Renaissance sculpture.

Essential works

The museum's collection is part of the collective catalogue of the Digital Network of Spanish Museum Collections (CERES), conceived as a space for dissemination which enables visitors to browse the various museum collections using the identifying features of each item (author, type of object, iconography, etc.).
