The ICO Museum conserves one of the most representative and important collections of 20th century Spanish contemporary art. It also organises activities and holds temporary exhibitions on architecture, town planning and their influence on the environment.

It was opened in 1996 to show the collections of Spanish contemporary art acquired by the Instituto de Crédito Oficial in the 1990s. The holdings of the ICO, which are not currently on show in the museum galleries, consist of three main collections: modern sculptures and drawings, showing the relationship between these disciplines and the development of 20th-century Spanish culture; contemporary Spanish paintings, including pieces by the leading Spanish artists of the 1980s; and Picasso’s Vollard Suite, a set of 100 etchings made by the Malaga-born painter from 1930 to 1937, considered the most important work in contemporary etching.

From 2012, its exhibitions have focused on architecture and town planning, and on disseminating the leading figures, schools and movements of contemporary architecture. Alongside the temporary exhibitions, the museum also offers an educational programme for children and young people, and guided tours with commentaries for adults.
