Set in a beautiful Renaissance palace, this museum is home to a major collection of Moorish objects, Roman sculptures and lead sarcophagi.
The museum is arranged over two floors and around several courtyards. It has an important collection dedicated to prehistory and local archaeology with items from Iberian, Roman and Visigoth cultures. Also of interest are Moorish, Mudejar, Gothic, and Renaissance pieces. The Iberian Lion of Nueva Carteya, the Roman sculpture of the God Mithra, and the Fawn of Medina Azahara are all outstanding pieces with great historic and artistic value.
The recent extension works in the museum have uncovered the largest theatre in Roman Hispania, which will be integrated into the visit.
The museum's collection is part of the collective catalogue of the Digital Network of Spanish Museum Collections (CERES), conceived as a space for dissemination which enables visitors to browse the various museum collections using the identifying features of each item (author, type of object, iconography, etc.).
