The Covarrubias Book Museum traces the history of the book from a didactic approach, entertaining and adapted to all audiences.
It occupies the first and second floors of the Archivo del Adelantamiento de Castilla, a 1575 building in the Herrerian style with Renaissance decoration. It houses the collections of the former Fadrique de Basilea Book Museum in Burgos, opened in 2010 as part of the Art and Bibliophilism project created by the Siloé publishing house, dedicated to the facsimile recreation of the most significant books and codices in history. It also houses other collections donated by individuals and institutions, such as the Norwegian community.
The exhibition features a chronological review of the history of books up to the present day, divided into four parts: The origin of books, which focuses on the first written manifestations and the great civilisations of antiquity; The enlightened Middle Ages, covering the age of manuscripts, monasteries and universities; The Gutenberg Universe, dealing with the revolution sparked by the invention of the printing press; and The 19th and 20th centuries, tracing the evolution of books since the Industrial Revolution through to the emergence of electronic reading supports.
In addition, it offers a programme of complementary activities including workshops and courses for children and adults.
