The aim is to conserve and disseminate the archaeological remains that illustrate evolution throughout history, from prehistoric times through to the Medieval period.

Currently, the MAC comprises the archaeology museums of Barcelona and Girona, the Greco-Roman city of Empúries, the historic site of Olèrdola, the Iberian archaeological site of Ullastret, and the Catalonia Underwater Archaeology Centre (CASC).
