The first Cistercian monastery on the Peninsula.

The monastery held great influence over the population during the 12th century.

It appears to have been founded in the year 1143, although there are discrepancies regarding this date. It was founded from a convent in the late 9th century. The church dates from the 12th century and is Gothic in style. The sanctuary of the church is on three levels: one with seven small apses, another comprising the ambulatory and the last with the apse of the Main Chapel.
