The oldest monuments in Bilbao are found in the old quarter. The area is also one of the main centres for leisure, shopping and cuisine in the city.

The old town is also known as the “Seven Streets”, originally comprising the following streets: Somera, Artekale, Tendería, Carnicería Vieja, Belostikale, Barrenkale and Barrenkale Barrena It was extended over time to the surrounding streets and squares. The area has a special charm with many colonnades, windowed balconies, coats-of-arms and old palaces. Santiago Cathedral, Begoña Basilica, La Encarnación Convent, housing the Sacred Art Museum, and the churches of San Antón, Santos Juanes and San Nicolás are just some standout monuments. In addition, the Arriaga Theatre, Plaza Nueva, La Ribera Market, Bidebarrieta Library, the old stock market building or the Basque Archaeology Museum are all worth a visit. The city’s bridges are also an emblematic architectural feature: San Anton, La Ribera or La Merced are just a few examples.
