The Roman theatre in Sagunto dates from the 1st century and was one of the first resources to be declared a national monument in Spain (1896).

It is built in the shape of a semicircle and has capacity for 8,000 spectators. The stones from the stands were removed and used to build the castle and various houses. The objects found in the excavations are today on display in the archaeological museum. The Roman theatre was built to take advantage of a depression in the land, which gives it excellent acoustics for theatrical performances staged in the open air. It has recently been restored following a design by the architects Giorgio Grassi and Manuel Portaceli, who have unified the appearance of the stage area and the stands and created the appropriate conditions for its use for theatrical and cultural events.
