This monument belongs to the Tarragona archaeological site, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The ruins date from the 1st to the 5th centuries AD, and the materials recovered show that they were luxury dwellings filled with marble, sculptures, murals, etc. They were built for imperial civil servants responsible for administering the province of Tarraconensis. It contains the residence of the provincial governor, Caius Valerius Avitus. The town was abandoned between the 6th and 7th centuries. The first archaeological excavations began in 1967, led by Serra Vilaró and Sánchez Real.
