Tarragona has a Roman archaeological site which has been awarded the World Heritage designation by the UNESCO. Its historic medieval centre is home to various monuments in a range of styles.
Most of the historic area is surrounded by Roman walls. Buildings such as the theatre, the amphitheatre, the circus and the remains of the forum are a testament to its Roman heritage. Particularly worthy of mention is the Roman and paleo-Christian necropolis, one of the most important in Europe. Many of its findings are on display in the Tarragona Archaeological Museum. The Cathedral square and surrounding streets are the hub of the mediaeval centre. Other sites not to be missed are the cathedral, the old Santa Tecla hospital, the Jewish quarter, the houses of Casa Canals, Casa Satellarnau and Casa Ripoll, constructed in the Modernist style. There are also Roman constructions in the suburbs such as the Cantera de El Médol quarry, the Puente del Diablo aqueduct and the Torre de los Escipiones tower.
