Because of the privileged location of the town of Carmona, it has been in existence continuously from prehistoric times to the present day, and thus preserves abundant testimony of its past. But it was under the Roman empire that Carmona reached its greatest splendour, whose remains can be seen in many places: the Puerta de Sevilla gate, the funerary site and the amphitheatre. Outside the city walls is an important section of the Roman necropolis, together with other remains of urban activity, such as the mines of ashlar stone used for construction, the pottery workshops and the amphitheatre for public spectacles. The Archaeological Site of Carmona was created as such by a decree from the Andalusian Regional Government in 1992.
