In the 18th century, this building was the largest industrial construction in all Europe.
Reminders of the cigarette makers who worked inside the Royal Tobacco Factory remain in the paintings found inside. Outstanding, among others, is that painted by Gonzalo Bilbao, whose best-known works portraying local customs and manners, including some of cigarette makers, are in the Fine Arts Museum in Seville. Around the factory was a moat filled with various shacks, which led to the belief that it must have had a defensive nature. Today it is the headquarters of Seville's University.
