It was founded by Saint Fructuosus in the 7th century, and during the Middle Ages was the centre of feudal power over this part of the Pontevedra estuary. The Benedictine monks abandoned the monastery in 1835 as a result of the enforced sale of church lands, and in 1890 it was occupied by the Order of Our Lady of Mercy. The cloister dates from the 16th century and is the work of the architect Ruíz de Pamames and Master Mateo López. The church is in the Renaissance style, and has Baroque elements on the balustrades of the choir.
