The palace was the residence of the archbishops of Toledo from the 13th until the 19th century. In 1939 it was seriously damaged by fire, and the losses not only included a valuable artistic heritage, but the Central State Archive was also burnt. The façade we see today was designed by Alonso de Covarrubias in the 16th century. The site also has a tower built by Archbishop Pedro Tenorio, which recalls the building's former use as a defensive fortress.
