The urban centre of Aranjuez, with its beautiful gardens and impressive monuments, has been granted the title of World Heritage site by UNESCO.
This was a recreational area for the monarchy and a source of inspiration for artists such as Joaquín Rodrigo, and is a delightful place to visit. The best point to start is the Royal Palace. Its spectacular exterior is a foretaste of its rich interior. The gardens of Parterre, the King's and Prince's gardens and the Island garden are ideal for a calm and peaceful stroll amid an abundance of fountains and sculptures in a natural setting. The Prince's garden is also the site of the Royal Barges Museum, with its spectacular collection of Spanish boats belonging to the Crown. The route continues with visits to former homes of the nobility such as the Casa del Labrador House, the Casa de los Oficios y Caballeros and the Casa de los Infantes. Sites worth visiting in the historic centre include the church of San Antonio, Medinaceli Palace and the former San Carlos Hospital.
