The Gaudí experience in León

Antonio Gaudí began the project for this building in 1891, commissioned by the cloth merchants of León. These business owners were trading with the Catalan textile industry. One of the Catalan businessmen, Carlos Güell, recommended Gaudí as a possible designer of the new headquarters of León’s textile business. The result was an Art Nouveau building with a medieval appearance. All the business activity took place on the lower floors, while the upper floors were used for flats. The building was declared a Historic/Artistic Monument in 1969.

Inside the Casa Botines, you can see how Gaudí combined technique and style in the architectural details, and also climb the original tower, completed in 1893. Some of the rooms host an exhibition about Gaudí and the history of the building, and a collection of 19th and 20th-century paintings from the España-Duero Foundation, by artists including Ramón Casas, Raimundo de Madrazo, Joaquín Sorolla and Ignacio Pinazo.
