The remains of the old town from the time of Al-Andalus and the buildings raised after the Christian Reconquest stand atop a hill overlooking Alcalá la Real.

A genuine Andalusí town once stood on this strategic hill, complete with a great mosque, citadel, residential area and a market. Its remains were uncovered during various several archaeological excavations.
The surviving elements include the abbatial church of Santa María la Mayor, a Gothic-Renaissance building (16th-17th centuries) abandoned –like the rest of the site– in the 18th century when the inhabitants moved to the plain where the town stands today.
The citadel is a fortified enclosure with a triangular floor plan which was rebuilt in the 16th century. It has towers at the corners, including particularly the keep which stands at a height of 20 metres.
Also remaining are sections of wall, towers (the Torre de la Cárcel or Prison Tower) and gates (Puerta de la Imagen) in the walled enclosure, which is one of the largest in Andalusia.
