Baeza's Renaissance monumental site, together with the ensemble in nearby Úbeda, has been awarded the World Heritage designation by the UNESCO.
The beauty of Baeza was sung by Antonio Machado, who worked as a teacher in the area for a number of years. Its buildings, palaces, churches and towers are splendid examples of the architecture of the Spanish Renaissance. Plaza de Santa María square is a good starting point, as it is the site of the cathedral and the seminary of San Felipe Neri. Plaza de Santa Cruz square contains the Jabalquinto Palace, the old university building and the church of Santa Cruz. Another key point is the Plaza del Pópulo square, the site of the Antiguas Carnicerías and Escribanías Públicas buildings, the Villalar Arch and Puerta de Jaén gate. In the centre of the square stands the Fuente de los Leones fountain. From here, a walk along the Paseo de la Constitución leads to other monuments such as the Balcón del Concejo, the Town Hall and the old church of San Francisco.
