Historic site
Ibiza, Balearic Islands

The historic quarter of Ibiza, located in the area known as Dalt Vila, is enclosed by 16th-century Renaissance walls.

There are five gates in the walls leading into the historic part. The main one is Portal de Ses Taules next to the Mercat Vell market, which is flanked by two Roman statues and is reached across a drawbridge. Other gates, such as the Portal Nou, are also worth seeing. The Ses Taules gate leads on to the Patio de Armas square, and then to the Plaza de Vila, the heart of the historic quarter. From here you can head for the old bastions to enjoy the view of the Mediterranean Sea. La Almudaina and the castle are two of the most impressive monuments in the old quarter. Other places that are not to be missed are include the cathedral, the church of Santo Domingo, and the Archaeological Museum, which holds a valuable collection of items found in different sites on the island. It also has an annex building dedicated to the Puig de Molins necropolis, the most important Punic necropolis in the world.
