This building-complex is a highly successful attempt to harmonise the geographic environment –the mouth of the Urumea river and the Zurriola beach, in the Cantabrian Sea– with contemporary architecture.

It comprises two cubed structures –in fact, they are popularly known as 'cubes'– raised on a platform and built with translucent glass, described by their architect Rafael Moneo as 'two stranded rocks'.
Between both cubes there is a wide two-tiered terrace with views towards the Zurriola beach, the mouth of the Urumea river and mount Urgull, the venue for the concerts in the San Sebastián Jazz Festival.
The largest of the 'cubes' houses the auditorium (1,800 spectators), the main venue for the San Sebastián International Film Festival, while the smaller cube contains a chamber hall. The complex also has other multifunction rooms as well as exhibition spaces, a restaurant and a range of shops.
