Art from the Magdalenian period
It is part of the Altamira Caves and Palaeolithic Cave Art in northern Spain which have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Located on the eastern slopes of the Beobategaña mountain, Altxerri Cave contains rock carvings and paintings from the period between 13,000 and 12,000 B.C. The carvings are well conserved, although the paintings have deteriorated on account of the damp, which is the reason this cave is today closed to the public. The figures depicted are of different types of animals, and include birds and fish and several species resembling snakes. However the image most frequently seen in the cave is the bison.
