Located in the high part of town, roaming the mediaeval streets leads to the discovery of a uniquely beautiful town centre comprising mansions, fortifications and traditional buildings decorated in bright colours.

Thanks to its strategic location, Hondarribia old town was fortified for centuries. The city wall, the two entry gates, Santa María turret, La Reina bastion, San Nicola´s fortress and Santiago bastion are still preserved from the original defensive structure. Th heart of the old town is located around the Plaza de Armas. Carlos V Castle, today a Parador hotel and dating back to the year 980 is located in said square. Santa María de la Asunción y del Manzano church is located nearby and dates to the 16th century, combining Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. The surrounding streets are a beautiful showcase of unique houses and buildings including the highlights of carved eaves, coats-of-arms and wrought-iron balconies.
