This mediaeval coastal town is the birthplace of two famous Spanish figures: the sailor Juan Sebastián Elcano and fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga.

The pyramid monument by Juan Sebastián Elcano welcomes visitors to Getaria. There are two further sculptures in homage to the sailor who travelled around the world in the town. The typical stairs and sloping streets in the old town are due to its location on a mountainside and are there to move easily up and down the slopes. The most important monument dates to the 15th century – San Salvador church, whose Gothic construction elegantly adapts to the irregular terrain. The two houses with towers next door are from the same period: Zarautz and Ochoa Ibáñez de Olano. Under the church is Catrapona passageway, one of those preserved in the old city wall. Aldamar Tower is also part of this defensive structure. Aldamar Palace dates to the 19th century and its owner was Balenciaga’s first patrons.
