Overlooking the famous beach of Las Canteras in the capital of Gran Canaria, the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium resembles a combination of a fortress and a lighthouse standing guard over the Atlantic.
The complex, which has two concert halls (symphony and chamber) in the auditorium part, and an adjoining convention centre, stands on a base of volcanic rock. The outer walls of masonry work rise up vertically, and this impression is reinforced by several adjoining elements which resemble towers rearing skywards. The hexagonal shape of the great symphony hall, together with other geometric forms, enhances the sensation of dense volume.
The crowning feature consists of a huge skylight made from translucent glass –recalling a lighthouse– which offers views over the Atlantic Ocean during concerts. Stainless steel and the varieties of local timber are the other two materials used by Tusquets.
