The area inside the walls of the city, together with the neighbourhoods of El Castillo, San Antón and Los Tiradores, has been declared a World Heritage site by the UNESCO.
It is worth making a stop a little before entering the city to see from a distance the spectacular view of the town appearing to 'hang' above the rocks. You can enjoy this sight from the convent of San Pablo, now a Parador hotel, with the Puente de San Pablo Bridge and the emblematic Hanging Houses perched atop the cliffs. A walk through the streets, squares and narrow lanes in the historic centre gives is a chance to see a wide variety of palaces, churches, convents, towers and buildings in a range of artistic styles. These include the cathedral, the Plaza Mayor square, the Town Hall, the Torre Mangana tower, the church of San Miguel and the shrine of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias. It is also worth visiting the Hanging Houses to see the important collection of contemporary art on display in the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art.
