Pantheons and cemeteries

A Coruña, Galicia

Where terra firma ends, life also ends. A simple and symbolic space for eternal repose beside the Atlantic Ocean, a product of the fertile imagination of the architect César Portela.

In ancient times, Cape Finisterre was held to be the end of all known land ('Finis terrae').
On the slopes which lead up to the cliffs on this part of the coast, Portela designed a cemetery which combines modernity and timeless tradition, simplicity and transcendence, minimalist principles and the precepts of what is known as 'land-art', thereby achieving an aesthetic space which aims to recall the magical sense of the ancient burials of Celtic culture.
This is a series of buildings, blocks and graphite boxes, arranged in a random manner around the terrain and connected with each other by means of a series of trails and pathways. These modern niches breathe a definite feeling of repose, of silence and of communion between man and nature.
