The oldest part of the city has been declared a World Heritage site by the UNESCO. The spectacular Mosque-Cathedral is unquestionably the star attraction.
The Great Mosque of Cordoba is considered to be the most important Islamic monument in the West. The calm and tranquil Courtyard of the Orange Trees leads on to an enormous forest of columns inside the structure, with arches, coloured marble and gorgeous ornamentation. The cathedral is also inside the building, and features an impressive combination of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. There are numerous other places to see on a stroll around the historic quarter, including the Alcázar fortress of the Christian Monarchs and its beautiful gardens, the narrow streets in the Jewish quarter, the synagogue and its ornate plasterwork, Viana Palace, the El Potro inn, the convent of La Merced, Calahorra Tower and the Roman bridge and temple. On the way you'll also come across several charming spots such as the Calleja de las Flores alley or the Plaza de la Corredera square.
