Castle-convent
A Gothic castle with an outstanding rose window in its church.
This castle-convent comprises three walled areas. The first wall, facing south, has the Puerta del Sol gate, from where the path to the castle begins its ascent. This gateway is made of volcanic rock, as are the cloister’s vaults. In the main façade, the Puerta de Hierro gate gives access to the fortress and to an area covered by a stone masonry vault. A highlight of the convent is the plasterwork wall decoration. The Church has an outstanding Gothic-style rose window. Inside the fortification there is also a Guest House and the Campo de los Mártires cemetery (of the Order of Calatrava). Between the cemetery and the church is the entrance to the castle, which has a library with walls made entirely of stone, in order to prevent fires.
