They are one of the most important ensembles of Palaeolithic art in Europe.

They include sites in the Autonomous Regions of Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country. The series of caves consisting of the Altamira Caves (which are famous for the outstanding quality of the naturalist paintings in the great room, depicting bison, horses, deer and wild boar) and 17 other caves in the north of Spain are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The paintings are the finest examples of Palaeolithic art found in Europe between 35,000 and 11,000 BC. The number of different caves, the diversity of techniques and styles on display and excellent state of conservation underline the importance of the Cantabrian coast for Palaeolithic cave art.
